Campus Information

Access
The main entrance to the campus is from Dock Road via the gatehouse. There is a pedestrian and cycle access via the routes alongside the Link Road and the footbridge opposite the Halls of Residence


Accommodation Office
The accommodation office which can assist with all types of accommodation, is in the Anson Building, ext 9063


Banks
There are several banks within about 25 minutes walking distance of the campus in Chatham High Street. All the major banks can be found there. They have slightly different opening hours but in general are open office hours Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings. Gillingham High Street is about the same distance from the campus and has branches of the major banks, though these are generally not open on Saturdays


Bicycles
Bicycles should be padlocked or otherwise immobilised in the cycle racks provided opposite the South end of Grenville, Nelson, Blake, to the North end of Nelson, and at the top of the steps leading to Jellicoe – they should not be brought into buildings.

Club, society, meetings etc room bookings, contact Emma Collyer in the campus Registry in the Blake Building on extension 8017 during term time and Kath Sinnott on extension 3181 during holidays

Campus management

Campus Registry
The Registry office is in the Blake Building and is open 10.00 to 5.00 on weekdays. The Registry handles loans, correspondence, fees and grant cheques, student records, coursework collection and general student queries. The contact numbers are extensions 9566, 8337, and 9951, with loans being handled on 8863.

Catering
The Restaurant is on the ground floor of the Pembroke Building and is open from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm each weekday. It serves breakfast, lunch and other snacks and is reasonably priced, but always has at least one very economically priced option on the menu to suit the student's budget. The Students' Union operates the on-campus pub, the Drunken Sailor, in the Jellicoe Building and bar lunches and evening snacks can be bought there.

Chaplaincy
A Chaplain, Keith Jeffries, is available on campus on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings in Pembroke P004. Staff and student Christian group meetings are held every Wednesday afternoon between 12.45 to 2.00pm and Mondays at 8.45am in Pembroke P004.

Common Room
A student Common Room is located in the North Sub Building on the ground floor of the Jellicoe Building. Its open from 9.00am to 9.00pm and is an 'alcohol free' social space for students, with a TV, games machines, pool table and a cold drinks /snacks machine. A second social space open to students is in the Restaurant seating area and remains open from 4.00 pm when the main Restaurant closes until 10.00 pm. It has hot and cold drinks, snack machines and is strictly a no-smoking area.

Doctor/Dentists
Student Services in Pembroke Building has a list of doctors and dentists in the Medway area. If you are taking up residence here then you should register with a local doctor as soon as possible. One of the nearest doctors is the Kings Family Practice on St Mary's Island (tel 01634 890712). For dental emergencies, Dentaline at Medway Maritime Hospital is open during evenings and weekends, (tel 01634 819191)

Job Shop
The jobshop offers part-time employment to students both externally and on-campus and will operate on-line with a website; see Student Services for details.

Learning resources
The Library and the Computer Laboratories are situated in the Nelson Building and are open during term times Monday to Thursday 9.00am to 9.00pm, Friday 9.00am to 6.00pm and Saturday 10.00am to 2.00pm. In vacation times these hours may be shortened and the vacation opening times will be posted in the library reception.

Enquiries should be addressed either to your School Office or the Gatehouse (which is open 24 hours a day).

Mail
There is a post box adjacent to the Halls of Residence, while the main post room is situated in the Anson Building. Stamps and reduced rate postage abroad can be obtained there. Incoming mail can be collected from the School Office or the Registry.

Mobile Phones
Please switch off your mobile phone when in lectures and when using the Computer Suite and Library as these are very disturbing to others. Action will be taken against offenders

NRI
The Natural Resources Institute is a major research and consultancy organisation with an international reputation for its work on the world's natural resources. It includes the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences.

Public Transport
The most convenient access to the campus is by car with excellent accessibility via the Northern link roads and the Medway tunnel. The nearest rail stations are Gillingham and Chatham, each about 20 minutes walk or a taxi ride away. Buses stop just outside the campus from the Chatham Pentagon Centre and Rail Station as well as from other parts of the Medway Towns.

Schools and Departments
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is located in the Grenville Building, the Medway School of Engineering is located in Pembroke (and Hawke.) and the School of Chemical & Life Sciences in Anson.

The University is concerned for your safety and security on campus. Please carry your resource card with you and be prepared to show it on request to security and other staff.

Shops
The Students' Union has a convenience store in Pembroke Building selling a variety of goods, including dairy produce, frozen food, an extended range of groceries, newspapers and phone cards (including mobile top-up cards). Otherwise the nearest shops are 10-20 minutes walk from the campus (see map) in Brompton, Gillingham or Chatham.

Sports and Recreation
The Sports Hall on the Lower Pembroke part of the campus is used by students, staff and the public. It accommodates a full programme of activities including basketball, netball, aerobics, 5-a-side soccer, badminton and volleyball. In between scheduled activities the hall can be booked. Normal opening times are approximately 12.00 to 9.00 Monday to Friday and 12.00 to 6.00 at weekends, though there may be slight daily variations. It also contains two fully equipped fitness rooms. Outside there are two tennis courts, beyond the Pembroke green. Sporting Clubs and Societies are run by the Students' Union and includes a Sailing Club with boats based on the nearby River Medway.

Student Services
Student Services are based on the ground floor of Pembroke and offer a range of counselling, advice, guidance and support for students. The Student Services reception centre will advise of the weekly schedule and assist with appointments.

Students' Union
The Students Union offices are upstairs in the Jellicoe Building in rooms J201 and J202. They are open for enquiries Monday to Friday between 10.00am and 3.00pm Tel: 020 8331 8053.

Teaching Building Opening Times
Lecture theatres are kept locked when there are no formal teaching sessions. The main teaching will take place in the Jellicoe and Pembroke Buildings. Other rooms for lectures and study are located in Grenville and Anson Buildings.

Telephones
There is a pay phone in the foyer of the Pembroke Building, in the centre of Grenville and Nelson Building, two in the Drunken Sailor and two payphones in the Halls of Residence (alongside which there are noticeboards for messages), the Bar and on the east side of Grenville Building. There is also a pay/card-phone on Central Avenue just outside the entrance to the Campus. In emergencies, urgent messages can be left with either the site Campus Registry Office on 020 8331 8863 or the Departmental Office on 020 8331 8863 (Earth & Environmental Sciences) or 01634 883428/883495 (School of Engineering).

Wheelchair access
There is wheelchair access to Anson, Blake, Grenville, Nelson, Hawke and Pembroke Buildings with a purpose built route between buildings on the South side. Access in Jellicoe is to the ground floor (the Drunken sailor and Sub) and to the first floor teaching areas only.
