Miscellaneous | ... | GUIDE FOR NEW STUDENTS 2002-2003 Campus Information MARITIME GREENWICH CAMPUS x Introduction The campus is based on an ancient site (now a World Heritage Site) on which was located the Royal Palace of Placentia in which Henry VIII and his daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, were born. The site is situated on the banks of the River Thames, next to the Cutty Sark ship, the National Maritime Museum and Greenwich Royal Park, which contains the Royal Greenwich Observatory. The site was used in 1694 to establish Greenwich Hospital for the relief and support of seamen and their dependants: Christopher Wren planned the site. The Hospital closed in 1869 and the principal buildings were used by the Royal Naval College from 1873 to 1998. Now the University of Greenwich is the major user of the site although Trinity College of Music is housed in King Charles Court. The Greenwich Foundation for the Royal Naval College administer the site and directly manage the grounds, Painted Hall, Chapel and Greenwich Gateway. Access The main entrances to the campus are the West Gate (off King William Walk) and the East Gate (off Park Row). Between 10 am and 5pm the campus is open to the public but outside of these hours, students will need to show their resource card to the security staff at the gate to gain access. The resource card is also required for entry to the separate buildings on campus. Accommodation The Accommodation Office offers help with all types of accommodation issues. It is based on the ground floor of Queen Mary Court Room M069. Opening hours is between 9am and 5pm Monday-Friday. (Ex. 9578) Banks There are banks within walking distance approximately 5-10 minutes of the campus. Bicycles Bicycles should be padlocked in the cycle racks provided at each end of the campus. Cycling is not permitted on the campus- they should not be brought into buildings. Booking of Rooms To book rooms for clubs, societies, meetings, etc. please contact Campus Registry in Queen Mary. (Ex. 7858) Campus Registry The Campus Registry is located on the ground floor of Queen Mary Court. Opening times are in teaching weeks – Monday to Thursday 9.30am-7pm, and Friday 9.30am-5pm. In non-teaching weeks – Monday to Friday 9.30am-5pm. The Registry handles loans, correspondence, fees, student records, coursework collection and general student queries. (Ex. 7858) Car Parking The University is unable to provide student-parking facilities. There is very limited street parking. Catering Sandwiches, snacks and drinks are available in the coffee bars in Queen Anne Court and Dreadnought Library. These are open 8am-8pm Monday - Thursday and 8am-4pm on Fridays. The Students' Union in Cooper building provides a range of foods and drinks and has a bar. There are other facilities on campus and also many restaurants/ food outlets in Greenwich Town Centre. Disabled Facilities/ Access Queen Anne – Access to most areas via ground floor, but not ground floor of north pavilion, 3rd floor of all pavilions or to mezzanine levels. Queen Mary – Access to all floors. Emergencies In case of emergency, the East Gate security can be contacted (ex.7616) First Aid First Aid boxes are located at the Security Reception Desks in the Dreadnought, Queen Anne and Queen Mary Buildings and at the East Gate Security Lodge. Please see the first aiders list within your school office. House Manager Claire Salzman is contactable via the Accommodation Office, ground floor of Queen Mary Court Room M067. The House Manager is responsible for the security, caretaking and cleaning on the campus (Ex. 8790) Job Shop The JobShop is available to offer job information and advice. They can be contacted by phone (Ex. 8811), through JobShop website or by e-mail jobshop@gre.ac.uk. Learning and Teaching Resources The Dreadnought Library contains the Library books, journals, general purpose computing facilities (with over 200 pc's) and language laboratories. There is also a general purpose computing laboratory on the fourth floor of Queen Mary Court. Opening hours are 9am-9pm Monday to Thursday, 9am-5pm Friday and Saturday. King William Court houses specialist computing laboratories (with over 200 p.c.s) for the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences and the School of Humanities. These Laboratories are open 9am-10pm Monday -Thursdays, 9am-5pm Fridays and Saturdays. Lost Property Enquiries should be addressed either to your School Office or the East Gate security. (Ex.7616) Medical Services The local GP practice to the Campus is at 48 Burney Street, Greenwich, London SE10 8EX, telephone number: 0208 858 0631. Their opening hours are Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 6.30 pm. Mobile Phones Please switch off your mobile phone when in lectures/tutorials and when in the Computer Labs and Library. Action will be taken against offenders. Public Transport The campus is in the heart of Greenwich centre. The train stations, Maze Hill, Greenwich and Docklands Light Railway are within walking distance of the campus. The trains are frequent and take approximately 20-25 minutes to London. Buses: 53 - Westminster; 188 - North Greenwich; 180,177 - Lewisham/Woolwich and Thamesmead; 286 will take you to Avery Hill and Eltham. School Offices Queen Mary Court: - Education & Training; first floor - Social Sciences & Law; second floor - Computing and Mathematical Sciences School: third floor Queen Anne Court: - Business School; first floor King William Court: - Humanities School; ground floor Security The University is concerned for your safety and security on campus. It is essential to carry your resource card with you and be prepared to show it on request to security and other staff. Shops/Market The campus is in the heart of Greenwich centre. It is a thriving and bustling town with a great atmosphere and is only 5 to 10 minutes walking distance to the campus. There are varieties of shops selling clothes, shoes, books, food etc. It also has one of London's most popular markets, which has existed for at least 1,000 years. It attracts thousands of locals and tourists every weekend, selling everything from new and second-hand clothes, to 70s music and 50s kitsch. Smoking Permitted Area Bar Latitude. Student Services Student Services are available from 9 am-5pm Monday to Friday to offer a range of counselling, financial, dyslexic advice, guidance and support for students. It is based on the ground floor of Dreadnought Building (Ex. 7868). Students' Union The Students' Union is based on the ground floor of Cooper Building (King William Walk) Office opening hours are between 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
